”The feelings of my family are with me.”: The posttraumatic coping of adolescent survivors of the Holocaust. $49.99 The long-term effects of genocidal wars on adolescent survivors are not sufficiently understood. Holocaust survivors can help us understand more clearly the long-term impacts of genocide, as well as the coping mechanisms survivors have used through the years to cope with those impacts.;This study, guided by the theoretical lenses of the traumatic stress, coping, and resilience literatures, is a secondary analysis of the interviews of 18 Jewish survivors of the Holocaust who were between the ages of 12 and 18 during World War II. The sample is purposive and taken from the Transcending Trauma Project data base, an ongoing qualitative research study of Holocaust survivors, their children, and grandchildren. Interviews were analyzed using a modified grounded theory approach and facilitated by the use of NUD.ist 4 qualitative software.;This study found three major long-term impacts on these individuals which continued into old age: sadness of the losses, including multiple losses of family members, loss of childhood, and loss of education; traumatic memories, including traumatic dreams; and anxiety and hyper-vigilance, especially regarding children and the world political situation. Love and work—intimate social support, and work that functioned to provide meaning in survival as well as distraction from traumatic memories—were the foundations of coping. Other important coping mechanisms used to manage the traumatic impacts of the Holocaust were: loyalty to the dead, the search for meaning and “survivor mission,” stories of strength, telling the trauma, and a community of sameness. Survivors managed the impacts of the war while still being able to “work well and love well.” |

A Time To Remember $15.95 A remarkable and personal account of life as a nursing Sister during WWII.Through her regular letters home over a five-year period, Vera Jones evokes the joys of new horizons, experiences and friends, whilst at the same time conveying the constant and deep-rooted anxiety of being separated from family and distanced from the war raging in Europe.Despite this however, the writer’s nursing is of paramount importance. There were sometimes difficult conditions; the need to adapt with available equipment and working in tents and huts converted into wards. The tropical diseases are especially described.Throughout the book there is shown a strong sense of the spirit of those days by patients and staff in so many ways. Hope in the future and support for one another was sustained at all times.Charting her progress from her home in Essex via the orange groves in Palestine to the hot and dusty plains of India, the letters reflect a deep sense of wonder and delight at all she is experiencing, written in a wonderfully descriptive and often witty style. The contrast with the realities of corresponding during such a dark period in world history is ever-present, highlighted by lengthy delays between deliveries of mail and the consequent worries for the well being of loved ones. This is a gentle book, an enchanting snapshot of family dialogue set against a bleak backdrop, which will capture the imagination and offer a new perspective on life during the war. |

A qualitative investigation of the psychological effects of recurrent miscarriage on male partners. $49.99 The present qualitative study was an exploration of the impact of recurrent miscarriage (RM) on male partners. The purpose of the study was to understand male partners’ perceptions regarding their experience of RM and gain a comprehensive portrayal of the range of psychological and emotional consequences of RM on men. Semistructured interviews were conducted with a diverse sample of 15 men whose partners’ experienced RM. Female partners completed a qualitative survey. Open, axial, and selective themes emerged from the data analysis, yielding a grounded theory. The grounded theory emerged from a total of 55 open categories, 25 axial categories, and 8 selective categories.;The grounded theory that emerged revealed that the participants often suffered increasing grief and sorrow. This sadness occurred in conjunction with anxiety related to their wives’ health and fear that they would never experience fatherhood. Without any clear explanation regarding the cause(s) of the RM, the men felt helpless because they are unable to “fix” the problem or relieve their wives’ grief and pain. These men frequently experienced anger directed towards their wives, the medical establishment and/or the world in general. Most of the men used some maladaptive coping strategies, such as drinking alcohol to reduce their stress and grief. They tended to reach out for support as the miscarriages continued and many relied on their family and friends, particularly their female relatives. RM caused changes in the majority of the men’s personal relationships and greatly affected the marital relationship. Changes in the couples’ relationships occurred for all of the participants, but even those who had major strains during the RM experience reported a stronger bond and closer relationship at the time of the interview. Directions for future research and clinical implications for medical and mental health professionals are discussed. |

A stereotype threat intervention that examines causal attributions, self-efficacy, and perceived faculty support. $49.99 Women underperform on math tasks in comparison to men when they are in a situation that is high in stereotype threat. Stereotype threat intervention research has found several methods for improving performance, such as allowing the female participants to attribute potential failure to an external source. This study replicated the results of a teaching intervention study that consisted of informing participants about stereotype threat, and asked that they attribute any performance-related anxiety to stereotype threat. All study participants were women. In order to make the stereotype threat message more salient, participants learned about the concept and theory by watching a video of Claude Steele discussing his research. The study additionally examined the attributions made for performance on the math test using the Causal Dimension Scale II. This study produced no significant differences. The results revealed no significant differences were found between the math test performances of the participants who were taught about stereotype threat and those who were not. The study did not show significant differences between groups on the Causal Dimension Scale II, a scale which measures attributions made for success or failure on a task. This study also looked at factors such as self-efficacy and perceived faculty support. Predictive relationships were examined by looking at treatment condition, self-efficacy, and perceived faculty support to see if these individual variables predict math test performance. Perceived faculty support did not predict math test scores, self-efficacy did not predict math test scores, and treatment condition did not predict math test performance. This study also examined potential interaction effects between self-efficacy with perceived faculty support and also self-efficacy with internal attributions in order to examine if they predict math test performance. Results indicated that these factors were not predictive of performance on the math |

Academic attitudes and psychological well-being of African-American psychology graduate students. $49.99 There has been a great deal of research exploring factors influencing academic success in African-American college students. While there is a paucity of research on African-American graduate students, researchers can borrow from the research on African-American undergraduate students to determine possible relationships to be investigated for African-American graduate students. Academic self-concept (ASC) and academic motivation (ACM) are among the factors previously investigated in undergraduates. The negative relationship between ASC and anxiety has garnered support in previous research (Cokley, 2000; Onwuegbuzie, 1999). There is also research to support the idea that graduate students in general are at risk for both physical and psychological problems due in part to changes that may come with beginning a graduate program (Bowman & Bowman, 1990). The goal of this study is to explore the relationships between academic self-concept, perception of competency in related domains, and academic motivation (intrinsic, extrinsic, and amotivation), and reported anxiety and depression among African-American psychology graduate students. Quantitative methodology was used in order to (a) measure whether a higher self concept and types of motivation were associated with lower reported anxiety and depression, and (b) answer the research question: "Is there a relationship between academic motivation, perception of competence and reported levels of anxiety and depression?" Results indicated that a higher ASC and perceptions of competence in general, academic, interpersonal, and leisure domains were related to lower depression scores. Intrinsic motivation was also found to be related to lower depression scores. Intrinsic motivation to know as well as extrinsic identified motivation were negatively correlated with anxiety. Hierarchical regression revealed that leisure competence predicted lower depression scores for participants. |

What family members can do is find support, set boundaries, detach with love — and eventually discover how to enjoy life whether their loved one finds recovery or not. Adolescents with Cancer: The Influence of Close Relationships on Quality of Life, Distress, and Health Behaviors $94.95 A diagnosis of cancer in adolescence occurs at a critical time of social and interpersonal development. Adolescents are encountering rapid physical growth, hormonal changes, and a shift from dependence on parents with associated reliance upon close peer and dating relationships. These close relationships often involve increased levels of intimacy and sexuality, and it is in the context of these relationships that adolescents are developing important competencies for later relationships in their adult years.A diagnosis of cancer in adolescence is likely to impact close relationships, although research in this area is scarce. We know little about how close relationships may impact critical aspects of adolescents’ lives, such as quality of life, psychological distress, and health behaviors. The current study was designed to address these gaps in the literature by providing an examination of how dimensions of close peer and dating relationships correspond with ratings of quality of life, psychological distress, and health-related behaviors among a sample of adolescents currently on treatment for cancer. In this first critical study of close peer and dating relationships among adolescents on active treatment for cancer, Drs. Carpentier and Mullins examine specific, discrete dimensions of close relationships (i.e., social support, negative interactions, dating anxiety, fear of intimacy) that are thought to relate to quality of life, psychological distress, and health-related behaviors (i.e., tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use; sexual risk-taking; nutrition/physical activity; overweight and dietary behaviors; sun safety). Results of this study provide an understanding of theimportance of close relationships to adolescents’ adaptation to cancer and highlight the need for continued examination of discrete aspects of close relationships among this presumably vulnerable population. Adult children of alcoholics: An exploration of heterogeneity utilizing childhood roles, family of origin health and adult attachment styles. $49.99 Research reports that an estimated forty-three percent of adults, or seventy-six million people, in the United States have relatives who are alcoholic. In addition, one in eight individuals, or an estimated 30 million adults, has an alcoholic parent. The literature suggests that the impact of growing up in an alcoholic family system may affect psychological functioning well into adulthood. Adult children of alcoholics (ACOAs) are at increased risk for a myriad of psychological symptoms including substance abuse/dependency, problems in interpersonal relationships, depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. However, research has also indicated that there may be more heterogeneity within this group than previously reported. It has been suggested that while patterns of maladjustment and increased risk for psychological distress may be evident, no clear “syndrome” related to this population was supported. This study explored whether an ACOA’s childhood family role (i.e. Hero, Scapegoat, Mascot and Lost Child) explained variance within this population, using adult attachment and family of origin health as outcome measures. Results did not support this hypothesis. This study also examined between group differences in adult attachment styles and family of origin health between a sample of ACOAs and Non-ACOAs. Analysis indicated that ACOAs reported significantly more Fearful attachment styles than Non-ACOAs. As well, post-hoc analyses indicated that ACOAs described their families of origin as promoting significantly less personal responsibility, as well as, having lower support for the expression of emotions and constructive conflict resolution than Non-ACOAs. This study provides information which may be utilized by clinicians working with this population. The impact of less secure attachment styles within the therapeutic relationship should be considered. As well, this study provides evidence that a specific pattern of maladjustment secondary to the dynamics created by the |

After the Diagnosis: Transcending Chronic Illness $9.99 After the Diagnosis is a heartfelt and moving lesson on the art of living well through serious illness. Dr. Julian Seifter understands the difficulty of managing a chronic condition in our health-obsessed, take-life-by-the-horns, live-forever world. When he found out he was suffering from diabetes, he was an ambitious medical resident who thought he could run away from his diagnosis. Good health was part of his self-image, and acknowledging that he needed treatment seemed like a kind of failure. In his practice, however, as he helped his patients come to terms with serious conditions, he began to understand that there were different, better ways to approach a life-altering diagnosis. In this frank account of his experiences both as a doctor and as a patient, he shares the many lessons he has learned. Writing with his wife, who has been an essential partner in his own treatment, he teaches you how to contend not only with the physical problems, the social stigma, and the emotional fallout of illness, but also with the medical establishment. Convinced that a deeper understanding of the spiritual, emotional, and physical challenges will bring not only comfort and support but also better care, he emphasizes truths rarely acknowledged in medical writing: • that a patient is not simply a collection of signs and symptoms, but someone with a particular personality, psychology, and history; someone with idiosyncratic wishes and goals • that blame, anxiety, obsession, and shame are inevitably part of the psychological journey, and that the doctor-patient relationship needs to make room for the whole person, including these difficult emotions • that sometimes doctor and patient have to throw out the rule book and construct highly personal, creative solutions • that denial, acting out, and “being bad” can sometimes be of benefit in managing illness • that optimism and emotional resilience— both of which |

To successfully adapt these parents need (a) information about AS and its treatment; (b) help learning new skills; and (c) social support. This project evaluated the ability of group parent education to meet the needs of parents of children with AS. A curriculum was developed for a 9-week educational workshop. Then the program was piloted with forty parents of children ages 3 through 17 diagnosed with AS. And finally, the program was evaluated on its ability to positively affect four variables related to healthy parent adjustment, including (a) child behavior, (b) social support, (c) parenting self-efficacy, and (d) parenting stress. The study used a quasi-experimental pre-post mixed design. Quantitative pre-post measures included (a) The Eyeberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI); (b) The Modified Social Support Questionnaire 6 (SSQ6); (c) The Parental Self-Efficacy Scale in the Management of Asperger Syndrome (PS-EMAS); and (d) The Parenting Stress Index/Short Form (PSI/SF) or The Stress Index for Parents of Adolescents (SIPA). All pre-post measures were analyzed via paired sample t-tests. The qualitative method included focus group interviews and a content or thematic analysis of the transcripts. Results suggest that participating in parent education can increase (a) knowledge of AS; (b) social support; and (c) parenting self-efficacy. No changes were observed on the quantitative measures in the intensity of the children’s behavior problems or parenting stress. Despite these mixed quantitative results participants overwhelmingly shared positive responses to the workshop during the focus group interview. While overall the findings support the efficacy of parent education with parents of children with AS, additional research is necessary as this study had a small sample size and no comparison group. An investigation of the attitudes and barriers of the use of computer technology among track and field officials in Taiwan. $49.99 The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes and barriers of the use of computer technology among track and field officials, and to discover the needs of information technology in Taiwan. It was designed based on a mixed method. The quantitative method was conducted to determine the attitudes and barriers by using computer technology among track and field officials and the subjects involved with 135 track and field officials who participated in the Chinese Taipei International Athletic Meet in Tainan City on May 29-30, 2008. A total of 101 responded for an effective response rate of 74.8%. An quantitative instrument included demographics and the Attitudes Toward Computer Technology Scale in Chinese version (ACT). Barriers in the Use of Computer Technology in Chinese version (BUC) was used as the research tool. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics (means, standard deviations, and percentage), t-test, MANOVA, and Bonferroni. The .05 level of significance was used for all statistical analysis. Furthermore, fifteen officials who have experience serving as chief officials and who participated in this championship were selected for a further face-to-face interview with a formal and semi-structured format. The qualitative method was designed to explore the needs of information technology. A significant difference was found between professions and the set of comfort/anxiety. Analysis showed that the age groups of 21-30 and 31-40 had stronger feelings of comfortable in the use of computer technology than the age group of 60 up. Furthermore, the findings indicated that the officials who have a master’s degree had more comfortable feelings about using computer technology than those with a junior college degree. The results determined 7 factors as either barriers or facilitators in the use of computer technology, including administration, training, software, support, time, equipment, and facilitator. Anger and Anxiety: Be in Charge of Your Emotions and Control Phobias $5.5 We live in a crazy world, so much so that you’d have to be crazy to stay sane! Most people feel frequently overwhelmed by stress. Some of us have the inner resources and the support of other people, and so can cope reasonably well, most of the time. Others among us are not so lucky. For months or even years at a time, people are suffering, at the end of their tether, buckling under the load. There are many people who react with depression, a life-sapping, draining, self-destructive mood that poisons everything. Others suffer anxiety focused on a variety of issues. And there are those who respond by hitting out at the world, and often at the people they love, the ones they least want to hurt. Of course, most sufferers of one of these reactions frequently feel one or both of the others, in an endless destructive cycle. Fortunately, help is available. This little book summarizes the results of a great deal of scientific investigation, carried out all over the world, and the author’s own extensive clinical experience. Dr. Bob Rich is an award-winning writer as well as a psychologist, so you know the book will be readable. You will be inspired to work on your own problems, entertained by the many case examples from Bob’s practice, and empowered to use the clearly described techniques. |

Antecedents and consequences of perceived control during the transition to adulthood. $49.99 A sense of control is arguably one of the most basic psychological needs and has been featured prominently in theoretical models of emotional disorders. Despite such attention, there is a paucity of support for such claims. The current study examined neuroticism, life stress, primary and secondary control, depression and anxiety within an integrative model. Participants were 154 adolescents from a larger study of risk factors for emotional disorders recruited as high school juniors (mu=16 years) and assessed every six months as they transitioned to adulthood. Results indicated that primary and secondary control were not distinct constructs, as predicted. Life stress and neuroticism were negatively correlated with control (neuroticism to a greater extent) and perceived control in general was negatively correlated with both depression and anxiety, denoting a common risk factor. The final trimmed model yielded a good fit (chi2 = 123.29, CFI = .96, RMSEA = .045) and did not include life stress as it was not significantly related to control or the outcomes once neuroticism was accounted for in the model. Indirect effects were significant indicating that neuroticism acted on both depression and anxiety via the mediator of perceived control. Implications and future directions are discussed. |

Anxiety Management in Adult Day Surgery: A Nursing Perspective $60.99 The book is the first of its kind to specifically outline the psycho-educational nursing interventions required by the anxious, adult patient undergoing elective, ambulatory surgery. Anxiety management is a considerable issue for the majority of surgical patients and has been recognised as such for many decades. However, no formal nursing intervention currently exists to support patients during this acute phase. This book is one of the first to provide strong evidence for the way in which patients can be assisted in the management of their anxiety. Moreover, it provides future direction for surgical nursing intervention in this new era of minimal invasive surgery where patients undergoing elective procedures increasingly require less physical nursing intervention and spend very little time within the acute hospital setting. |

Attachment and the quality of romantic relationships of young adults with same-sex parents. $49.99 The current study investigated attachment and the quality of romantic relationships in young adults with same-sex parents. Specifically, two variables, attachment-related anxiety and attachment-related avoidance were investigated to determine what extent they predicted relationship support, depth, and conflict. Participants consisted of 82 young adults, ages 18 to 30, who were raised from birth by same-sex parents and who were or had been in a committed romantic relationship in the past 18 months. Participants were required to complete a Demographics Questionnaire, the Experiences in Close Relationships–Revised (ECR–R) questionnaire, and the Quality of Relationships Inventory (QRI). Both measures demonstrated strong reliability estimates ranging from .84 to .98. Results indicated that the study sample did not differ from the normative samples in regards to avoidance and demonstrated significantly lower scores on the anxiety dimension. This finding suggested a more secure attachment pattern among young adults with same-sex parents compared to their peers’ traditional families. Results of multiple regression analyses supported the study’s three hypotheses. Lower scores in both attachment-related anxiety and avoidance (i.e., a secure attachment style) predicted the following characteristics of relationship quality: (a) higher support, (b) higher depth, and (c) lower conflict. These findings provide evidence that young adults raised by same-sex parents exhibit healthy attachment and interpersonal development. The results of this study suggest important sociopolitical, theoretical, and practical implications. |

Attachment anxiety and avoidance: Relationship to body image and exercise behavior. $49.99 This study was designed to investigate the role of attachment anxiety and avoidance in predicting persons’ body image, body appreciation, and obligatory exercise behavior. Two hundred and twenty eight participants (100 men and 128 women) completed the Relationship Scales Questionnaire (RSQ; Griffin & Bartholomew, 1994), Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ; Cash, 2000), Body Appreciation Scale (BAS; Avalos et al., 2005), and Obligatory Exercise Questionnaire (OEQ; Pasman & Thompson, 1988). Results provided at least partial support for many of the hypotheses. The current study replicated results from previous research pertaining to the relationship between attachment and body image. However, the results suggest that attachment relates to body image differently in men than in women. For men, only attachment anxiety was related to body image, whereas for women body image was associated with both attachment anxiety and avoidance. Obligatory exercise was not strongly related to attachment in either men or women. Health evaluation was a very important factor in body image for men and women in relation to both attachment anxiety and avoidance. |

Benzo Blues $21 Valium. Atvian. Xanax. These benzodiapezines or “benzos” are among the most routinely prescribed medications in our society, used to treat chronic anxiety in millions of people. But these drugs can actually prolong and aggravate anxiety, causing individuals to postpone dealing with core problems and to increasingly rely on addictive medication with extremely debilitating effects. Of the more than 30 million people who take these drugs, more than four million are addicted. Dr. Edward H. Drummond offers hope with a revolutionary program for overcoming chronic anxiety without the use of tranquilizers. His approach flies in the face of established practices, particularly at a time when health care programs offer dwindling support for psychotherapy, preferring the cheaper course of having patients medicate themselves. Certain to inspire controversy, Benzo Blues is the work of a visionary author out to challenge the medical establishment. Its publication will be greeted with enormous interest by the millions of people affected by these powerful drugs, all of whom will find a new way of dealing with a lifelong problem. |

Beyond the Spectacle of Terrorism $0.01 Prominent social critic Henry Giroux explores how new forms of media are challenging the very nature of politics in his most poignant and striking book to date. The emergence of the spectacle of terror as a new form of politics raises important questions about how fear and anxiety can be marketed, how terrorism can be used to recruit people in support of authoritarian causes, and how the spectacle of terrorism works in an age of injustices, deep insecurities, disembodied social relations, fragmented communities, and a growing militarization of everyday life. At the same time, the new media such as the Internet, digital camcorders, and cell phones can be used to energize sites of resistance, provide alternative public spheres, pluralize political struggles, and expand rather than close down democratic relations. Giroux considers what conditions and changes are necessary to reinvigorate democracy in light of these new challenges. |

Ceremonies for Spiritual Healing and Growth $135 Ceremony as therapyFormal ceremonies seem to be universal in human experience, addressing something very deep and basic in the human psyche. They tap into that vast subconscious reservoir of wisdom and strength that every human being possesses. To these qualities ceremonies add their own understandings of life and of God. They emphasize the presence of God in all things. The important transitions in our lives inevitably create anxiety—even happy transitions, such as weddings. We move from the familiar to the unknown. Our role in the community may change, which means that we will be treated differently. Sometimes it is our own sense of who we are that changes. We seek to live differently. All of these changes have an anxiety of their own.Ceremonies use the “languages” of the heart—metaphor, poetry, meditation, music, liturgy, and drama—to address those anxieties. Bypassing the sterility of logic and analysis, a ceremony evokes the power to affirm and to heal that straightforward rational communication cannot touch. A ceremony has the quality of set-apartness. Something special is happening! Words spoken in a ceremony will have much more impact than those same words would have in a more ordinary context. A ceremony brings new perspective to things with which we struggle. Many ceremonies enlist the support of one’s community. The leader often represents one’s spiritual tradition, and other members of the community may be present. Even if the ceremony is done in the privacy of one’s home or of a therapist’s or pastor’s office, others are present in the participant’s imagination. Ceremonies also involve God, whose presence is acknowledged and whose blessing and support are assured. The ceremonies presented here are down-to-earth and practical. They can easily be adapted to many situations, and can stimulate the reader to create his/her own ceremonies to meet the unique needs |
