CBT Therapy Cures Anxiety Problems Providing the Best Anxiety Therapy and Depression Treatment
Anxiety and depression afflict millions of people around the world, negatively affecting their psychological, social, and physical health in a number of devastating ways. Many people underestimate just how serious depression, anxiety, and Stress can be, but it is virtually impossible for a person to reach his or her full physical, emotional, and intellectual potential while suffering with intense stress, depression, and / or anxiety problems. All decisions and voluntary actions begin with conscious thought. When those thoughts are clouded, distracted, or otherwise negatively affected by depression and anxiety, a person’s decisions and actions can be dramatically changed, usually for the worst.
Fortunately, there is a real cure for these conditions, a proven method of anxiety therapy and depression treatment that can alleviate emotional pain and restore a patient to his or her “old self.” This method is known as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, also known as CBT Therapy. This revolutionary therapy does not require any kind of medication, and it is proven to be effective when properly administered. CBT Therapy acknowledges the thinking process as the most important contributor to depressive and anxious moods. Many negative people claim “I’m not a pessimist; I’m a realist.” However, it is possible to be unrealistically negative. CBT Therapy shows that most people suffer from depression and anxiety problems because they have fallen into illogical patterns of thinking that set them up for harmful expectations. These illogical expectations can lead people to dread events and circumstances that have not actually happened, and that are not likely to happen. With the right depression treatment, patients can begin to adjust their thought patterns, to think rationally about their lives and their expectations for the future. It is not a comfortable thing to look critically at your own thought patterns and to acknowledge that some of them are illogical and harmful. However, people must approach this process much as they would deal with examining an X-ray or an MRI; it is better to know what is wrong so that it can be fixed.
CBT Therapy has astounded many mental health experts with its simplicity and effectiveness. Yet, it has two potential drawbacks. Traditional CBT Therapy must be conducted by a trained professional, which means that patients must have physical access to such an expert, and a way of paying for the service. Many people around the world who suffer from depression, anxiety, stress, or post-Traumatic Stress Disorder who would benefit from CBT cannot get to a CBT therapist and / or cannot pay for the treatment. Fortunately, an English psychologist has recently created a solution to these problems by offering a sophisticated CBT Therapy program online. Mood Control was created to replicate one-on-one consultation with a CBT therapist, but any English speaking / reading person in the world with internet access can benefit from this cutting-edge technology. With innovations like this, it is not unrealistic to imagine that depression, anxiety, and stress disorders will be all but eliminated within the next decade or two.

A randomized pilot study of motivation enhancement therapy to increase utilization of cognitive-behavioral therapy for social anxiety. $49.99 Despite the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), most socially anxious individuals do not seek treatment. The current study evaluated the efficacy of three-session motivation enhancement therapy (MET) designed to increase CBT utilization among those with social anxiety. Twenty-seven non-treatment-seeking socially anxious individuals (92.6% of whom had social anxiety disorder) were randomly assigned to either MET for CBT (n = 12) or a psychoeducation control condition (n = 15). After the intervention, 41.7% of MET participants attended at least one session of CBT compared to 13.3% of controls. Further, willingness to schedule a CBT appointment increased at a significantly greater rate in the MET condition. Results suggest MET for CBT may be a time-efficient means to increase CBT utilization among socially anxious individuals. |

Arginine vasopressin and male attachment: A marital and family therapy perspective. $49.99 Social neuroscience offers a promising way to understand some dimensions of adult attachment. Arginine vasopressin (AVP) is a neuropeptide with significant implications for human social behavior and it provides an important testing ground to explore links between social/interpersonal neurobiology and attachment. It has a distinctive impact on the social/relational behavior of certain male animals, most notably prairie voles. It fosters monogamy, creates attachment to both mate and offspring, and increases affiliation and a desire for physical proximity with other animals of the species. There has been much speculation that it might play a similar role with human males. This study is the first attempt to research this topic among human males. It explores the possible linkage between AVP and various measures of attachment and sexual behavior.;This study utilized a snowball sample of 78 single males between 18-36 and compared plasma levels of AVP to responses to the Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised and the Relational Ethics Scale. These two questionnaires were selected because they measure key aspects of social and relational attachment. Subjects were also asked questions about their sexual and relational patterns. Single males were selected because of the variety of different socially acceptable relationship patterns available to them. It was hypothesized that there would be a negative relationship between AVP and attachment avoidance, a positive relationship between AVP and attachment anxiety, and a positive relationship between AVP and both childhood and adult attachment quality. It was also hypothesized that, after making adjustments for age, race, and religious practice, that AVP would correlate with fewer sexual partners over the last year and more preference for a single partner. Finally, it was hypothesized that, with the same adjustments, plasma levels of AVP would interact with reported childhood attachment quality to influence adult attachment |

Assessment Disorders: Psychological Assessment and Treatment $47.91 Over the years, different therapists in the treatment of psychiatric disorders, particularly neurotic disorders have evolved therapeutic strategies. This book is a comprehensive guide to these strategies in the treatment of patients suffering from anxiety disorders. The first chapter provides an overview of anxiety disorders, which includes concepts, definitions, and manifestations. The various perspectives on these disorders from different schools of thought are discussed in chapter two to help the reader to get an overall view of possible causes. Therefore, it emphasizes the dictum that accurate diagnosis is necessary for effective treatment. Chapter three highlights the important tools and techniques used in making assessments, while chapter four looks at some psychological treatment techniques. Finally, chapter five presents some of the difficulties faced by therapists and tries to offer solutions. The appendix is a handy tool, which gives a compact view of the procedures of the more commonly used techniques in a clinical setting. The authors stress, through their analysis, that we should recognize the uniqueness of each patient in terms of needs, personality, family networks, interactional processes, social support, etc. Therefore, they emphasize the importance of a holistic approach towards therapy, one that combines therapies even though one might subscribe to a particular school of thought. Actual cases are presented to establish this. |

Attachment Issues in Psychopathology and Intervention $69.95 To be a human being (or indeed to be a primate) is to be attached to other fellow beings in relationships, from infancy on. This book examines what happens when the mechanisms of early attachment go awry, when caregiver and child do not form a relationship in which the child finds security in times of uncertainty and stress. Although John Bowlby, a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, originally formulated attachment theory for the express purpose of understanding psychopathology across the life span, the concept of attachment was first adopted by psychologists studying typical development. In recent years, clinicians have rediscovered the potential of attachment theory to help them understand psychological/psychiatric disturbance, a potential that has now been amplified by decades of research on typical development. Attachment Issues in Psychopathology and Intervention is the first book to offer a comprehensive overview of the implications of current attachment research and theory for conceptualizing psychopathology and planning effective intervention efforts. It usefully integrates attachment considerations into other frameworks within which psychopathology has been described and points new directions for investigation. The contributors, who include some of the major architects of attachment theory, link what we have learned about attachment to difficulties across the life span, such as failure to thrive, social withdrawal, aggression, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, dissociation, trauma, schizo-affective disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, eating disorders, and comorbid disorders. While all chapters are illuminated by rich case examples and discuss intervention at length, half focus solely on interventions informed by attachment theory, such as toddler-parent psychotherapy and emotionally focused couples therapy. Mental health professionals and researchers alike will find much in this book to stimulate and facilitate effective new |

Building Strengths And Skills $56.95 This is a much-needed practice book that demonstrates how helping professionals can emphasize their clients’ resilience, strength, and capacities, rather than focusing on pathology or deficits. It offers an integrative practice model for both assessment and intervention that interweaves strengths-based (specifically solution-focused therapy and motivational interviewing) and skills-building (cognitive-behavioral) approaches. In the strengths-and-skills-based model, helping professionals assume that clients possess the necessary capacities to solve their own problems, transforming the therapeutic relationship into a collaboration focused on bolstering motivation and resources for change. When these resources are exhausted or when deficits become a substantial barrier, then practitioner and client work to develop an individualized skills-building plan. A wide range of examples, written by Jacqueline Corcoran with experts from different fields of practice, clearly demonstrate how the model can be applied to individuals and families struggling with behavior problems, depression, substance abuse, anxiety, violence, and abuse, so that both strengths and skills maximize the client’s success. This innovative, dynamic resource is a must have for practitioners across the helping, social service, and mental health professions. |

Burnout in Families: The Systemic Costs of Caring $64.95 Sleeplessness, depression, anxiety… these are common symptoms of the burnout that often accompanies living with a loved one who has experienced some kind of traumatic stress. It’s well known that the loss of a child, a life-threatening injury, sexual assault or combat experience can affect the victim in traumatic ways, but what’s often overlooked is how this trauma affects those closest to the victim – the family.Burnout in Families focuses on the emotional vulnerability of families exposed to the chronic or acute stress of one of its members. Editor Charles R. Figley brings together seven psychologists from around the United States to take a closer look at what’s now known as secondary traumatic stress disorder – the burnout that occurs when family members care for or just live with other family members who have undergone a traumatic life event. The authors provide a comprehensive review of the available literature and offer solutions for treating and preventing family burnout and the marital and family discord that inevitably follows. Burnout in Families is an ideal text for university-level psychology, family therapy and social work courses. |

Clinical Manual of Anxiety Disorders $60 Anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent, persistent, disabling, and costly psychiatric disorders, yet they are often underdiagnosed and undertreated. Fortunately, there have been major advances in understanding and treating these conditions in recent years; this is one of the most exciting areas in modern medicine. This clinical manual has earned its place in the literature as one of just a few volumes that covers all of the major anxiety disorders and presents integrated contributions from both psychopharmacologists and psychotherapists—all in one compact work written for busy clinicians.Though concepts of anxiety have long enjoyed a central position in philosophical and psychoanalytic theories, empirical research on anxiety disorders has a relatively short history. Here, 16 experts discuss advances in diagnosis, assessment (including relevant rating scales), pharmacotherapy, and psychotherapy. This volume begins by reviewing recent important diagnostic, epidemiological, neurobiological, and treatment findings—all of which have significant implications for clinicians. Subsequent chapters cover • Panic disorder and agoraphobia—Laboratory studies of fear have significantly advanced our understanding of the neurocircuitry and neurochemistry of panic. Furthermore, panic disorder is now readily treated with both medications and psychotherapy. • Specific phobia—Viewed for many years as mild and even trivial, this common disorder is now recognized for its very real associated distress and impairment. Exposure therapy is the treatment mainstay, though pharmacotherapy should be considered particularly when there is comorbidity.• Social phobia (or social anxiety disorder)—In the past few years, the first FDA-approved medications for this disorder have been made available. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is also effective for the treatment of this underdiagnosed and undertreated |

Cognitive-Behavior Therapy $64 Now four decades old, cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) is one of the most heavily researched—and effective—forms of psychotherapy, useful in treating both psychiatric and medical disorders. In this compact, richly detailed volume, 13 distinguished contributors show how CBT’s primary focus of identifying and changing maladaptive patterns of information processing and related behaviors is fully compatible with biological theories and treatments and can be combined with pharmacotherapy to optimize treatment results in clinical practice. In five chapters that illustrate the broadening reach and scope of CBT, these experts discuss • Schizophrenia—Shows clinicians how to incorporate the strengths of CBT into their daily practices for treating patients with schizophrenia. CBT methods (e.g., thought recording, examining the evidence, activity scheduling, graded task assignments, psychoeducation) can help relieve both positive and negative symptoms, reduce the stigma associated with the illness, improve depression and anxiety, and increase social skills.• Bipolar I disorder—Focuses on a concerted effort to educate the patient about bipolar disorder, which helps patients and families develop an “early warning” system and be prepared with interventions to forestall relapse. CBT methods also teach patients how to reduce common psychosocial stressors and adhere to their prescribed medications.• Computer-assisted CBT—Discusses an exciting new frontier that has already found excellent levels of patient acceptance and can reduce the amount of clinician time required for successful treatment. Using virtual reality and other technologies, computer-assisted CBT enhances therapy by providing interactive methods of learning and rehearsing CBT skills and by illustrating problem-solving methods with multimedia scenarios.• CBT for treating physical illnesses—Details the |

Depth Oriented Brief Therapy $52.5 As the demand for time-limited, demonstrably effective psychotherapy increasingly dominates the mental health professions, many therapists are caught between this demand and their aversion to brief therapy, which they see as sacrificing vital qualities of the work—the depth and durability of resolution reached, the thoroughness of change in the emotional and unconscious basis of the problem, the trust-based client-therapist relationship. These therapists are asking: Is it possible for clinicians to provide in-depth therapy in the cost-conscious, time-limited world of managed care? In this groundbreaking book, authors Bruce Ecker and Laurel Hulley show how to work directly and immediately with the emotional and unconscious meanings that structure the very existence of the presenting problem, making in-depth therapy so effective as to be brief. This book represents a new stage in brief therapy and offers clinicians new hope of maintaining professional satisfaction in time-effective practice. From start to finish, this book is a practical guide to working deeply and briefly with individuals, couples, and families and includes:a clear and complete methodology and conceptual framework for producing lasting change beyond symptom relief a compAndium of specific techniques for depth-oriented brief therapy how to work time-effectively with clients whose presenting symptoms are driven by unresolved, lifelong emotional wounds abundant case examples with clients who suffer from a wide range of presenting symptoms, such as low self-esteem, chronic depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, agoraphobia, symbiotic attachment, dissociation, psychogenic pain, and sequelae of sexual abuse.Depth-Oriented Brief Therapy is written for therapists, psychologists, counselors, social workers, psychiatrists, and other helping professionals who want to meet the challenge of managed care without losing the deeper levels of change |

Diet and Nutrition in Palliative Care $139.95 Optimal terminal and palliative care requires consideration of the patient and family unit as well as cultural and religious sensitivities. The patient’s well being in terms of mobility, anxiety, stress, social interaction, and pain control needs expert focus and attention. Furthermore, there is an increasing awareness that diet and nutritional support plays an integral part of the patient’s holistic well being. The interface between nutritional, emotional, cultural, and medicinal support challenges terminal and palliative care providers to recognize the right thing to do, often in the face of considerable uncertainty.Currently, there is no comprehensive book on nutrition in terminal or palliative care that is suitable for novices and experts alike. The Handbook of Nutrition and Diet in Palliative Care addresses this deficiency in literature. Designed for doctors, nurses, caregivers, and those interested or working within the palliative or end of life domain, each chapter contains sections on applications to other areas of terminal or palliative care, practical methods and techniques, guidelines, key points and ethical issues. The book is divided into six sections:Setting the SceneCultural AspectsGeneral Aspects CancerNon-Cancer ConditionsPharmacological Aspects Despite the complexity of the correlation between diet and disease, there is now a sufficient body of evidence to start applying nutritional science in everyday clinical practice. Increasingly, a strong interest and up-to-date knowledge and understanding of scientific studies on nutrition enables clinicians to help patients under their care more effectively at every stage of their illness. In response to this need, this handbook presents important information on the holistic use of nutrition and diet therapy in palliative care. |

Dopamine and Glutamate in Psychiatric Disorders $63.99 Continous rigorous research in basic neurosciences and in clinical studies has enormously increased our knowledge of the neurobiological basis of mental functions and of the neuronal dysfunctions underlying such diseases as schizophrenia, depression, attention deficit disorder, and Parkinson’s disease. A transmitter system does not work in isolation, it interacts with other transmitters and the balance between several transmitter determines the outcome, either physiological or pathological. Such a critical balance exists between dopamine and glutamate, which in many brain areas play functionally opposing roles. In Dopamine and Glutamate in Psychiatric Disorders, a panel of neurochemists, pharmacologists, experimental psychologists, and clinicians summarizes our current understanding of the interactive role of dopamine and glutamate in psychiatric diseases and from that develops novel therapeutic strategies and possibilities for the future. Among the new ideas presented are hypotheses on the role of dopamine and glutamate in aggression, the glutamate system in anxiety disorders, glutamate and neurodegeneration, on the origin, progression, and cognitive aspects of Parkinson’s disease. Additional chapters offer illuminating insights into a variety of psychiatric diseases, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, stress, aggression, addiction, schizophrenia, depression, social phobias, dementias, bulimia, and neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. Each chapter summarizes the prevalence and symptoms of the disease and explains the involvement of dopamine and/or glutamate systems using the newer molecular approaches such as transgenic knockout or knockin mice and recent brain imaging techniques. The authors also offer a critical selection and evaluation of relevant literature and a description of future directions for new therapy development. Path-breaking and insightful, Dopamine and Glutamate in Psychiatric Disorders offers |

Ego Psychology And Communication $15.58 Writing in a lively straightforward tone and offering numerous examples, Polansky demonstrates that verbal communication plays a major role in mental health and is essential to preventing and curing emotional disorders. He shows why the inability to achieve effective speech reflects neurosis, interferes with self-healing potentials in the personality, and hampers patients in their efforts to make use of any of the talking therapies. He also makes clear how verbal expression leads to the growth of intimacy between people on a mature organized level and guards the individual against the existential anxiety of being completely alone in a potentially meaningless universe.Synthesizing basic theory that underlies skilled interviewing, the book serves as an introduction to ego psychology. It offers an appraisal of the role of verbal communication, especially in casework, individual therapy, and counseling, as well as in most group treatments situations. The author covers such topics as the resiliency of the ego, the logic of defenses, coping mechanisms, and the theory of object relations. He provides numerous illustrations of specific security and distance maneuvers found in everyday practice. He also describes techniques for dealing with these maneuvers by patients in face-to-face situations. This book is as vital to the field as when it first appeared in 1971. Polansky summarizes major concepts of modern ego psychology and relates them to what is known today about the process of verbal communication. It will be especially useful for those who seek to understand and treat the human personality through speech. Ego Psychology and Communication is designed for courses in social work, clinical psychology, educational counseling, guidance, and psychiatric nursing. Practitioners in social work, psychology, and psychiatry will find it to be a valuable addition to their personal reference libraries. |

Exercise for Mood and Anxiety: Proven Strategies for Overcoming Depression and Enhancing Well-Being $10.19 Exercise has long been touted anecdotally as an effective tool for mood improvement, but only recently has rigorous science caught up with these claims. There is now overwhelming evidence that regular exercise can help relieve low mood-from feelings of stress and anxiety to full depressive episodes. With Exercise for Mood and Anxiety, Michael Otto and Jasper Smits, well-known authorities on cognitive behavioral therapy, take their empirically-based mood regulation strategy from the clinic to the general public. Written for those with diagnosed mood disorders as well as those who simply need a new strategy for managing the low mood and stress that is an everyday part of life, this book provides readers with step-by-step guidance on how to start and maintain an exercise program geared towards improving mood, with a particular emphasis on understanding the relationship between mood and motivation. Readers learn to attend carefully to mood states prior to and following physical activity in order to leverage the full benefits of exercise, and that the trick to maintaining an exercise program is not in applying more effort, but in arranging one’s environment so that less effort is needed. As a result readers not only acquire effective strategies for adopting a successful program, but are introduced to a broader philosophy for enhancing overall well-being. Providing patient vignettes, rich examples, and extensive step-by-step guidance on overcoming the obstacles that prevent adoption of regular exercise for mood, Exercise for Mood and Anxiety is a unique translation of scientific principles of clinical and social psychology into an action-based strategy for mood change. |

Funny Peculiar: Gershon Legman and the Psychopathology of Humor $26.8 Why are jokes funny? Why do we laugh? In Funny Peculiar, Mikita Brottman demurs from recent scholarship that takes laughter— and the broader domain of humor and the comical—as a liberating social force and an endearing aspect of self-expression. For Brottman, there is nothing funny about laughter, which is less connected to mirth and feelings of good will than to a nexus of darker emotions: fear, aggression, shame, anxiety. Brottman rethinks not only the mechanisms of humor but also the relation of humor to the body and the senses. To this end, she provides an engrossing account of the life and work of Gershon Legman, exiled author, publisher, and sexologist, Alfred Kinsey’s first bibliographer, and legendary compiler of the dirty joke. Like Freud, Legman was convinced of the impossibility of understanding humor apart from sex, and Brottman shows how his two massive works on the subject, Rationale of the Dirty Joke and No Laughing Matter, provide a framework for understanding the ambivalent and often hostile impulses that underlie the comic impulse in its various guises. In lively and enlivening chapters, she traverses dirty jokes, the figure of the “evil clown” in popular culture, the current popularity of “humor therapy,” changing fashions in stand-up comedy, and the connection between humor and horror. Brottman’s sparkling prose, laced with wit, does not obscure the seriousness of Funny Peculiar. It is a thoughtful and wide-ranging elaboration of the Freudian claim that joking, in point of fact, is no laughing matter. |

Impotent $13.47 Impotent is a collection of moving stories about a time when individuals are reduced to letters on a medical chart and it is easier to get a refill on a prescription than approval for therapy. In revealing vignettes, Matthew Roberson clinically catalogs the hopes, dreams, and failures of people identified only through form-like abbreviations (C– for co-dependent, I– for Insured). In these case studies, Roberson captures his subjects” lives poignantly by supplementing their diagnoses with unconventional footnotes, lists, and medicinal warnings. Insomnia and Anxiety $129 The statistics show that as much as twenty percent of the population suffers from chronic insomnia—and one-fourth of those with the condition eventually develop an anxiety disorder. As comorbid conditions, they contribute to any number of physical and social problems. Yet too often insomnia is undiagnosed, or treated as merely a symptom of the patient’s anxiety.Insomnia and Anxiety is the first clinician guidebook that considers the evaluation and management of insomnia and related sleep disturbances that occur conjointly with the common anxiety disorders. By exploring the ways that one condition may exacerbate the other, its authors present robust evidence of the limitations of viewing insomnia as secondary to GAD, agoraphobia, PTSD, and others in the anxiety spectrum. The book reviews cognitive and emotional factors common to anxiety and sleep disorders, and models a cognitive-behavioral approach to therapy in which improved sleep is a foundation for improved symptom management. Beginning and veteran practitioners alike will find vital insights into all areas of these challenging cases, including:Diagnostic and assessment guidelines.Cognitive-behavior therapy for insomnia.Behavioral strategies for managing insomnia in the context of anxiety.Cognitive strategies for managing comorbid anxiety and insomnia.Sleep-related cognitive processes.Pharmacological treatment considerations.Insomnia and Anxiety is highly useful to clinical psychologists given the range of treatment strategies it describes and to researchers because of its emphasis on the theoretical and empirical bases for its interventions. In addition, its accessible style makes it an excellent training tool for students of therapy and psychopathology. |

Morita Therapy and the True Nature of Anxiety-Based Disorders (Shinkeishitsu) $19.95 This book presents the progressive nature of Morita therapy across four distinct stages: an isolation rest stage, a light monotonous work stage, a labor-intensive work stage, and the social integration stage. Essentially, the experiential knowledge the clients gain by moving through the inpatient treatment becomes the therapy. Though the classical therapy was initially designed to treat anxiety-based disorders, it is presently used in Japan, China, and Australia for depression, personality disorders, eating disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Morita therapy fosters akiraka ni mikiwameru-koto in the client (clear discernment), and a healthy mind/body. Throughout the book, Morita reflects on the theories of his contemporaries such as Sigmund Freud, William James, Mario Montessori, and Jean Charcot. |

Excerpt: Sertraline hydrochloride (trade names Zoloft, Lustral) is an antidepressant of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class. It was introduced to the market by Pfizer in 1991. Sertraline is primarily used to treat major depression in adult outpatients as well as obsessivecompulsive, panic, and social anxiety disorders in both adults and children. In 2007, it was the most prescribed antidepressant on the U.S. retail market, with 29,652,000 prescriptions. The efficacy of sertraline for depression is similar to that of older tricyclic antidepressants, but its side effects are much less pronounced. Differences with newer antidepressants are subtler and also mostly confined to side effects. Evidence suggests that sertraline may work better than fluoxetine (Prozac) for some subtypes of depression. Sertraline is highly effective for the treatment of panic disorder, but cognitive behavioral therapy is a better treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder, whether by itself or in combination with sertraline. Although approved for social phobia and posttraumatic stress disorder, sertraline leads to only modest improvement in these condition… More: |
