A Patient and Carer's Guide to Bone Diseases and Fractures

A Patient and Carer’s Guide to Bone Diseases and Fractures

$19.71

Have you, your loved ones or friends ever had a bone problem? Have you ever wished that you knew a bit more about the nature of the problem? Well, anxiety arising from lack of knowledge of the nature of bone diseases creates more problem than the disease or injury itself. “A Patient and Carer’s Guide to Bone Diseases and Fractures” throws light on bone diseases and fractures in a language a non-medically educated person can understand. It takes the reader through the symptoms, signs, investigations and treatment of common bone diseases and fractures, avoiding or explaining medical jargon, and provides a basis for understanding the doctor’s management of your or your ward’s bone problem. It is based on Professor Iwegbu’s 36 years’ experience of treating patients with bone diseases and fractures. The theme is “understanding and coping with” bone problems, because the aim is to help the affected person cope through understanding the problem better. The book also touches upon alternative remedies for some bone problems, which orthodox orthopaedics shies away from. There is a glossary of medical terms in the last chapter. “This is indeed a unique book. I have read a few medical pamphlets and help-yourself books written for the lay-person; none matches this book in content or clarity. I quite like the “understanding and coping with” theme of the book and particularly enjoyed the chapters on arthritis and osteoporosis. I strongly recommend this book to all who may have bone problems or a need to know more about them”. (Yasmin Jilla, London).”As a mother of three young children, I was particularly interested in reading the chapter on children’s bone problems and was pleased by the simplicity of the presentation. I could never have imagined that medical problems could be made so easily understandable. This chapter alone is worth the price of the entire book” (Anna Umu, London).

A comparison of Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) profiles of adult survivors of child sexual abuse and adult clients with depression and anxiety served by a university counseling center.

A comparison of Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) profiles of adult survivors of child sexual abuse and adult clients with depression and anxiety served by a university counseling center.

$49.99

This study examined the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) full scale clinical profile results from male and female college students with a self reported history Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA) who sought mental health treatment at a Midwestern university counseling center, and compared them with PAI full scale clinical profile results from a group of clients initially presenting with depression and or anxiety and no reported history of CSA in the same setting. Both groups showed significant elevations on the Anxiety and Anxiety Related Disorders Scales with the CSA group scoring very significantly higher on both scales. The CSA group also showed significantly higher elevations on the Positive Impression Management (PIM), Infrequency (INF), Antisocial Features Scales and the ARD-T (Trauma) Subscale. Male and Female CSA survivor profiles were similar and resulting Cluster Profiles of CSA and nonCSA groups were not significantly different. More studies of mental health correlates of CSA were suggested and aggregating data from future studies was endorsed as a way to increase statistical power and enhance the prospect of finding significant and useful differences in psychopathology and profiles of mental health between CSA and nonCSA groups who evidence depression and anxiety. Implications for practice are discussed, as are directions for future research.

A treatment program for ulcerative colitis.

A treatment program for ulcerative colitis.

$49.99

This works proposes a treatment regiment for ulcerative colitis. Etiologically, ulcerative colitis is caused by a group of defective chromosomes. As a result, patients suffer from severe gastrointestinal related problems. Stress, although once seen as the "golden answer," has been refuted; however, science has indicated that stress plays a major role in the onset of colitis relapses—as well as intensity and frequency. Therefore, the program proposed is geared at helping the patient cope with ulcerative colitis, decrease associated anxiety/fear with illness, and stress management/reduction.

The modality for this treatment follows core cognitive-behavioral concepts and techniques. For decades, this model has been shown to be effective in achieving desirable effects in this field. This treatment was created for gastroenterologists who seek to better their patients' quality of life.

ARE YOU LOST OR FOUND?: RECOGNIZING THE WAKE UP CALL

$13.95

For almost 10 years, I spoke to captivated students and professionals about the “Lost or Found” analogy that covers critical everyday life-changing issues on leadership, relationship, management, and the complexities of dealing with change, personal growth and self-restoration. One of the commonality of concerns raised by those surveyed for this book was why “most employees joined their corporations with a high sense of commitment, enthusiasm and satisfaction and over time, lost their motivation and focus and literarily functioned as non-inspired employees driven solely by financial needs and/or dependence? Over the years I observed how some of these professionals took on increasing levels of stress and anxiety over problems they couldn’t control. To assist with strategies of addressing stress and change, I began to discuss a concept known as “peaceful anxiety.” Peaceful Anxiety simply means, If you do not have the ability to change events and situations that impact your life, do not overreact to such situations. As we develop the ability to control our reactions to problems or issues outside our realms of control, we begin to develop a higher sense of peace. In 2002, a set of questions were developed and over 1500 undergraduate and graduate students with professional careers ranging from mid to executive levels were surveyed. My overall findings lead to this book being titled, Are You Lost or Found? Ever Wondered:· The percentages of women who prefer male bosses?· The percentages of men who prefer female bosses?· Why 62% of professionals are Lost?· If you are Lost or Found?

Accepting, suppressing, and monitoring thoughts about body shame in college women.

Accepting, suppressing, and monitoring thoughts about body shame in college women.

$108

Body shame is defined as experiencing internalized negative views about body image because it differs from society’s representation of the ideal body image. Given that research indicates that shame about body is a risk factor for disordered eating behaviors, psychological distress, anxiety, and mood disorders, research is needed to examine the effectiveness of specific coping strategies on thoughts related to shame about one’s body. The impact of three coping strategies (suppress, accept, and monitor) on the management of unwanted thoughts (shameful thought about one’s body) and on the distress related to the unwanted thoughts is examined in college women. A total of 69 college women reporting shame about their body but not diagnosed with an eating disorder completed this study. Self-report questionnaires on psychological functioning and coping were completed. Magazine advertisements, which were used to amplify the sensitivity of the unwanted thought, were viewed before random assignment to one of the three groups. Data was collected at three different time periods: pre-intervention, intervention, and post-intervention. Results indicate that women reporting higher levels of psychological flexibility were associated with better psychological functioning. Distress levels and appraisal ratings about overall physical appearance significantly increased after viewing idealized body images. No differences were found during the intervention between the three groups on the frequency of the unwanted thought and on the distress levels related to the unwanted thoughts. At post-intervention, participants in the suppression group reported more general thoughts than the acceptance group. Limitations and future research directions are discussed.

Agitation in Patients With Dementia: A Practical Guide to Diagnosis and Management

Agitation in Patients With Dementia: A Practical Guide to Diagnosis and Management

$84

Among the most frustrating challenges for any health care professional are treating and alleviating the distress of an agitated patient with dementia—especially compelling in the midst of today’s unprecedented population explosion among adults over age 65. For the first time ever, people age 85 and older represent the fastest-growing segment of our population. As we find ways to meet this challenge, we are also transforming how we think about aging. Instead of the pejorative term “senility,” which implies that simply to be old is to be infirm, we refer to the ABCs of geriatric psychiatry: disturbances in (A)ffect, (B)ehavior, and (C)ognition, which are not normal at any age. This remarkable monograph offers practical direction on assessing and managing agitation in patients with dementia. Furthermore, this encouraging work shows that successful outcomes—with response rates as high as 70%—can be achieved with a systemic approach, involving both patient and caregiver, that includes cognitive, behavioral, psychodynamic, and reminiscence therapies. This concise book identifies and diagnoses the multiple types of agitation in dementia patients. It also explains how to look for and treat the underlying medical etiologies, and recommends treatment and management techniques, including: • Definitional and theoretical conceptualizations of agitation in the elderly; the epidemiology (i.e., the possible relationships involving agitation and dementia, and the dynamic between symptoms and the care setting) and neurochemistry (i.e., the neurobiological changes of behavior involve biochemical and structural causes, not structural causes alone) of agitation• Behavior assessment scales as evaluation tools; differential diagnoses (distinguishing delirium, depression, psychosis, and anxiety from the many precipitating and maintaining factors underlying agitation); clinical assessment and management of

An educational workshop for parents of children with Asperger syndrome.

An educational workshop for parents of children with Asperger syndrome.

$49.99

Having a child with Asperger syndrome (AS) is often confusing and stressful for parents. These parents are at increased risk for stress, depression, and anxiety. To successfully adapt these parents need (a) information about AS and its treatment; (b) help learning new skills; and (c) social support. This project evaluated the ability of group parent education to meet the needs of parents of children with AS. A curriculum was developed for a 9-week educational workshop. Then the program was piloted with forty parents of children ages 3 through 17 diagnosed with AS. And finally, the program was evaluated on its ability to positively affect four variables related to healthy parent adjustment, including (a) child behavior, (b) social support, (c) parenting self-efficacy, and (d) parenting stress. The study used a quasi-experimental pre-post mixed design. Quantitative pre-post measures included (a) The Eyeberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI); (b) The Modified Social Support Questionnaire 6 (SSQ6); (c) The Parental Self-Efficacy Scale in the Management of Asperger Syndrome (PS-EMAS); and (d) The Parenting Stress Index/Short Form (PSI/SF) or The Stress Index for Parents of Adolescents (SIPA). All pre-post measures were analyzed via paired sample t-tests. The qualitative method included focus group interviews and a content or thematic analysis of the transcripts. Results suggest that participating in parent education can increase (a) knowledge of AS; (b) social support; and (c) parenting self-efficacy. No changes were observed on the quantitative measures in the intensity of the children’s behavior problems or parenting stress. Despite these mixed quantitative results participants overwhelmingly shared positive responses to the workshop during the focus group interview. While overall the findings support the efficacy of parent education with parents of children with AS, additional research is necessary as this study had a small sample size and no comparison group. An emotion dysregulation model of eating disorders.

$49.99

A variety of factors have been identified as risk factors and possible vulnerability factors in the development of eating disorders (EDs). Recent research on emotion regulation has suggested that emotion regulation processes might be involved in the development of EDs. Females at high-risk for the development of an ED (N=59) were compared to those at low-risk (N=54) in order to see if individuals at high-risk had the following emotion dysregulation difficulties as delineated by Mennin, Heimberg, Turk, and Fresco (2005): (1) heightened intensity of emotions; (2) poor understanding of emotions; (3) negative reactivity to one’s emotional state; and (4) maladaptive emotional management responses. Those in the high-risk group had significantly more difficulty in emotion regulation and an emotion dysregulation variable predicted group placement (high-risk or low-risk) while statistically controlling for anxiety and depression.

Anxiety Management in Adult Day Surgery: A Nursing Perspective

Anxiety Management in Adult Day Surgery: A Nursing Perspective

$57.99

The book is the first of its kind to specifically outline the psycho-educational nursing interventions required by the anxious, adult patient undergoing elective, ambulatory surgery. Anxiety management is a considerable issue for the majority of surgical patients and has been recognised as such for many decades. However, no formal nursing intervention currently exists to support patients during this acute phase. This book is one of the first to provide strong evidence for the way in which patients can be assisted in the management of their anxiety. Moreover, it provides future direction for surgical nursing intervention in this new era of minimal invasive surgery where patients undergoing elective procedures increasingly require less physical nursing intervention and spend very little time within the acute hospital setting.
