Screening for adult ADHD as a function of complex figure drawing. $49.99 Poor academic performance, poor social relationship communication skills, difficulties in marriage and employment, and anxiety, depression, and aggression are possibly results of Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Difficulties in diagnosis prevent many adults from being diagnosed, understanding their challenges, treatment, and learning to cope with their condition. The current study examined validity of complex figure drawing as a screening tool for ADHD. Disruptions of executive function in persons with ADHD should prevent them from pausing to plan a strategy and/or sustaining attention to the task required to effectively draw a complex figure. Hypotheses were that persons with ADHD would score lower and draw more and/or longer lines to compensate for errors. A pilot study was conducted with 82 non-ADHD university students. An ANOVA demonstrated that the Modified Taylor was drawn more consistently by non-clinical participants than the Rey-Osterreith or the Medical College of Georgia complex figures, and that a 15-second time interval for color pencil change provided lower standard error in data than 20-, 25-, or 30-second time intervals. The current study tested 61 students. Eighteen participants had been diagnosed with ADHD by a physician and 53 participants had not been diagnosed with any psychological disorder. Five participants in the non-ADHD group were excluded because they had been diagnosed with psychological disorders other than ADHD. Independent Samples t-tests demonstrated that participants with ADHD scored significantly lower and drew significantly longer total line lengths than non-ADHD participants. Pearson Product-Moment correlations established a significant positive relationship between symptoms indicated by the CPT-II and CAARS:SL. Score had a negative relationship with symptom indications, but that relationship was not significant. Implications and limitations are discussed. |
